Why does DIS was developed? Most of the gas engines are supplied already with an ignition system.....

We all know that very often there are problems with these systems and the OEM ignition systems can not be repaired. In case of problems the customer is very often left alone with the problem. A new ignition system needs to be bought.

That’s our point:

Our target was to develop a very reliable system which does not “just keep the motor running” but has a high ignition power which is unique in the market. Each ignition system is tested under 8 bar / 116 psi. This guarantees a save run and do not collapse with an oily spark plug.

Furthermore you should know what your ignition system is doing. Is the advance curve active? Was the RPM limiter active during the last flight? In the ignition battery low? If so, you will get a warning even the plane is airborne.

In addition we offer of course our already famous after sales service. Our GlowControl customers already appreciate this. The ignition system should support after some years a different motor? No problem, we will program for you a new ignition curve (if necessary) and DIS is ready for your new motor. You do not need to buy a new ignition system.

What does characterize DIS ?

1.DIS is a completely digital and micro controller based.

What is the benefit of DIS compared to other systems?

DIS is powered by 2 LiPo cells and works in a range between 6  and 10V absolute reliable. If necessary 6-7 cells NiMH or 3 cells LiFePo are possible to use. The LiPo cells should have a capacity of 500 - 1000 mAh, depending of the number of flights are planed.

The power consumption of DIS is compared to other ignition systems very low. The single cylinder version consumes just 260 mA at 6000 RPM!!

How is this possible? For the high voltage generation we have had an eye on the effective and low-loss generation which is only active if it is necessary. This allows an absolute stable ignition voltage up to 20000 RPM without any important temperature rise of the system.


The spark plug cap the unknown? part.

The best ignition system doesn’t work proper if the spark plug cap is of “secondary quality”.

What is the target for a good spark plug cap?

There are 3 items:

1. Absolute save connection

2. Perfect electrical connection

3. High voltage resistance


In case a spark has cracked the isolation the complete ignition system will become useless because the spark will always strike in this position again. Repairing the cap is almost impossible. It must be exchanged.

For this reason we only use upper class spark plug caps with silicon isolators.

Ignition interferences, what’s that?

Owner of standard ignition systems know this: The system is installed, but the receiver system failed as soon as the motor runs. Now the rebuilding inside the model starts until it works. A bad feeling remains especially if the model is airborne.

Different when using DIS:

Here you can place the receiver on top of the housing without interfering the radio system. Knowing that of course nobody will do this you can imagine how many reserves are inside the system. How this is possible? Already during layout the board and selecting the components the base is made for the noise immunity.

During the development of DIS we have had an eye on components which are very  common in the industry. This guarantees a reliable operation over a long period.

Test, test, test, ....

DIS was tested before the general release extensively on our simulators and by qualified staff on different motors on test stands as well as in flight.
